Ravens horrible offseason might have gotten worse.
It looks like that the Baltimore Ravens offseason has gone from bad to worse when they heard that they will not open the 2013-2014 NFL season with a home game. To make it all worse, according to Pro Football Talk, “The Ravens, we’re told, are bracing for a Thursday night opener at Denver, Pittsburgh, or Chicago.” All three teams combine records in the 2012-2013 season were 33 wins and 17 losses with 8 losses accounting only to the Steelers. The Ravens not only have an opening road game but have to face 3 potential 2013-2014 playoff teams which wouldn’t look good if the defending Superbowl champions lost their first (road) game.
How can a bleeding defense which lost 8 players in total which includes linebacker Ray Lewis, safety Ed Reed, and center Matt Birk? I believe the backups need to step up and play with energy because there is no way the Ravens can fully recover after losing 8 STARTING players through retirement or free agency. Yes I purposely put starting in all caps.
With the lack of leadership that Ray Lewis constantly added, now the Ravens need to find a leader in the defense to bring an average defense in the 2012-2013 season back to a top-10 defense in the 2013-2014 season.
The good thing is that the Ravens were not going to let the bleeding defense keep bleeding. Having added Elvis Dumervil and Marcus Spears and resigning several other players, the Ravens might need a good draft to bring in more quality players. Remember the 2013 NFL draft reputation isn’t how good the QB’s are but because how great the defensive and OL players are.
Only time will tell if Ravens GM Ozzie Newsome offseason decisions actually hurt or helped the Ravens team. Hopefully for Ravens fans’ that losing 8 starting players equals into a playoff run.
